Southwest sells seats, and going to the Olympics with "Today"

BREAKING NEWS: Southwest Breaks with tradition!

Southwest Airlines is rolling out significant changes to boost customer satisfaction and financial performance. Shifting from its 50-year tradition of open seating, Southwest will now assign seats and introduce a premium seating section with extended legroom, responding to customer preferences for more structured seating arrangements.

While this is a break from tradition, many airlines that have copied the Southwest Model (AirAsia, Cebu Pacific, Frontier, Jetstar, RyanAir and WizzAir,) have been selling seat assignments for years. The airline’s management has been accused of leaving this money on the table.

This move is part of Southwest’s broader modernization efforts, including enhancements like faster WiFi, in-seat power, and larger overhead bins in the past two years. The airline is also working on a refreshed cabin design with new, more comfortable seats from RECARO.

Additionally, Southwest is expanding its operations with the introduction of redeye flights, starting Valentine’s Day 2025. This is a new step toward 24-hour operation capabilities. These will initially include nonstop services between:

  • Las Vegas to Baltimore & Orlando

  • Los Angeles to Baltimore & Nashville

  • Phoenix to Baltimore

This expansion into overnight flying is expected to generate additional revenue and cost savings, allowing the airline to increase aircraft utilization and capacity without needing more aircraft.

Another significant announcement is the appointment of Ryan Green as the new Executive Vice President of Commercial Transformation. Green, who has a solid track record within the company, will lead the development and rollout of these new initiatives. Southwest plans to reveal more details about these changes at its Investor Day in late September. The updates to seating and the introduction of redeye flights are part of a strategic transformation aimed at meeting evolving customer needs, enhancing shareholder value, and maintaining the airline’s distinctive culture and flexibility.
